The Craft
Featuring the work of creative craftsmen, the theory of color, and industry news. Learn practical workflows, useful theories, and actionable insights from existing (and emerging) leaders and teachers in our industry.

(video) "In this episode we talked with Vincent about his inspirations to color grading, working with clients, and his experience working in feature films, documentaries, commercials and much more!"

A great idea at a tiny price: A PDF designed to help you generate a quote based on your discussion with a prospective client: "All important key points of a quote are clearly and elegantly contained on one page. With a simple cross-system, you can work systematically to evaluate the effective effort. The most important questions and answers are on one page. No more mistakes in pricing. No more unpaid overtime. Tips where to charge additional costs."

If you're considering building your own entry-level color suite, you're not alone. Charles Haine cuts through the noise to get you started.

"Netflix has released an interesting video that provides a behind-the-scenes look into its Camera Lab and how a camera gets on the Netflix Approved Camera List."

The industry needs to solve this problem with digital purchases.

Hacking color for professional gain.

I'm linking to the official forum post with the release notes. A few new features, including for the advanced panel, plus a range of fixes.

(video) Colorist Cullen Kelly: "Sculpting beautiful highlights is one of the things that can really set your work apart and help you achieve the level of beauty you want for your images. Learn the best practices for highlight recovery, including a fun way to sculpt and retain your highlights using the curves tool."

(videos) After the very useful explanatory introduction, "The process for working with multi-channel EXR files in Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve Fusion page and their standalone Fusion Studio is essentially the same. But without a free and incredibly useful plugin (Reactor) and a small LUA script (Hos_SplitEXR_Ultra) it will be a painful and time-consuming process." Plus, many embedded videos for additional learning.

(video) "Continuum’s director of product marketing, Nick Harauz, gives you a look at 2022’s new GPU-accelerated blurs, 60+ color grades inspired by popular film and TV, the improved PixelChooser, and the new Mocha integration within all BCC+ effects."

"Boycott 7-Zip Because It's Not On Github; Seriously? There is a campaign on Reddit that is gaining some traction calling for a boycott of the software..."

Some of these features may be useful to the finishers that read this Newsletter: "Although there are several [new features] that have made big news, the more meaningful changes often seem less than awe-inspiring to Adobe’s critics. Let me counter that narrative and point out six features that have truly improved the daily workflow for my Premiere Pro projects."

What native framerates do the different streaming and live-casting platforms support? Inquiring minds want to know.

"Wish you could move a bunch of folders all at once or instantly move every file of a certain type into a new folder? The command line may be the answer."

Stay updated on the latest hardware that's shipping - because the craft of color grading isn't just about software. Plus, keep an eye on future equipment trends and hardware odds-and-ends.

"I thought this would be a great time to go back to my consulting roots and share some real-world comparisons." Of course, if Puget didn't come out on top they wouldn't have written this. But it is fun to look at the marketing tactics of the 'Big Boys' and compare the different hardware configurations for professional uses.

An interesting solution for a Mac Mini-based assist station.

"The difference in performance between a naked SSD and one with an NVMe SSD heatsink is marked and goes to show just how important having some cooling is on your NVMe SSD.  The difference between the various heatsinks on the other hand is not quite as obvious."

A fun review to read: "As the least expensive native 4K laser projector on the market, Sony's VPL-XW5000ES cuts some corners to get to its $5,999 price point, but overall it delivers winning performance."

If you're tempted to use this UPS because of its price then you need to read this review. In sum: You get what you pay for.

Interesting: "As an alternative to Apple's spatial audio with AirPods, Netflix is rolling out its own spatial audio system in collaboration with Sennheiser. It works with select titles such as Stranger Things."

"According to 3DCenter’s calculations, who have chosen RTX 3070 as the reference point, most of NVIDIA’s high-end models are overpriced and should cost a lot less. However, mid-range and low-end models from the NVIDIA lineup could be considered well priced..."

"Mac malware is rare, but it does exist. Here's how to get a free virus scan to check for malware on your Mac, how to get rid of Mac viruses for free, and how to avoid getting infected in the first place."

Sunday Fun(nies)
Random thoughts, tidbits, and fun stuff that caught my attention this week. Maybe it's color grading related. Maybe not. Ya got'ta read to the end of the Newsletter to find out.
Fun. Funny. Except for the bit about the disruptions and trashing of the cinemas. If you haven't heard about it, this will get you up to speed.

"Whether you’ve experienced the visceral cinematic experience that is RRR in theaters or on Netflix, or RRR has just come onto your radar, let’s take a look at this film, what makes it so unique, and catch you up on everything you need to know about Tollywood cinema and how it could continue to shape the future international film landscape."

(video) Neat-o: "Millions watch rocket launches but barely see satellites moving in orbit or deployable structures in operation. This is going to change through live or recorded footage.”

Th- th- th- that's all folks! I'll see you next Sunday.
